Late Night Snacks: Kansas, West Virginia win Big 12 clashes; Duke, Arkansas, Seton Hall lose to unranked teams

GAME OF THE NIGHT: Butler 79, No. 21 Seton Hall 75, OT

The Bulldogs had big outings from Roosevelt Jones (23 points) and Kellen Durham (21 points) as they earned a solid road Big East win on Tuesday night in overtime. Seton Hall had a big night as Sterling Gibbs went for 30 points and Khadeen Carrington went for 20 points but the Pirates didn’t have enough and ultimately dropped to 13-4 (3-2 in the Big East. Butler is now 13-5 and 3-2 in the Big East as well.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

1. Miami 90, No. 4 Duke 74

The Blue Devils were thoroughly outplayed by Miami in the second half as Angel Rodriguez had 24 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds for the Hurricanes. Manu Lecomte added 23 points and the Hurricanes were 10-for-20 from the three-point line. Duke was 6-for-21 from 3-point range as Tyus Jones and Justise Winslow both struggled again in this one. Jahlil Okafor had 15 points and 15 rebounds in the loss.

2. No. 16 West Virginia 86, No. 18 Oklahoma 65

Guard Jevon Carter came off the bench to score 18 points and add seven rebounds and Devin Williams had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds as the Mountaineers moved to 15-2 (3-1 Big 12) on the season. Oklahoma turned the ball over 22 times and played with no consistency in this one.

3. No. 9 Kansas 67, No. 24 Oklahoma State 57

The Jayhawks didn’t play their best, but still looked like the superior team in a home Big 12 win. Frank Mason had 16 points and Kelly Oubre added 14 points as Kansas remained undefeated in conference play. Also, Cliff Alexander did this.

4. Tennessee 74, No. 19 Arkansas 69

The Volunteers earned another big home win as they withstood a furious late rally from Arkansas. Josh Richardson had 20 points and continues to have a great senior season while the win made Tennessee 10-5 (2-1 SEC) on the season. Robert Hubbs III also had a good effort with 16 points.

STARRED

1. Syracuse’s Rakeem Christmas

The senior big man had 35 points and nine rebounds to help lead the Orange to an overtime ACC victory over Wake Forest.

2. Iona’s A.J. English

One of the countries better mid-major guards played 39 minutes and scored 24 points to go along with 10 assists in an Iona win over Fairfield.

3. VCU’s Treveon Graham

Briante Weber and Melvin Johnson each had poor shooting nights, but Graham went for 26 points and eight rebounds in a VCU win over Rhode Island. Graham was 10-for-17 from the field and 4-for-8 from 3-point range and had 16 of his points in the second half. VCU has won nine straight games.

4. Abilene Christian’s Harrison Hawkins and Parker Wentz

This duo combined for 60 points as Hawkins had 31 and Wentz had 29. The Wildcats also got 20 points off the bench from LaDarrien Williams in a win over Northwestern State.

STRUGGLED

1. Michigan’s Derrick Walton

The sophomore was 1-for-7 from the field for two points and only had two assists as Ohio State’s defense smothered him.

2. Penn State’s perimeter shooting

The Nittany Lions shot 16 percent (4-for-24) from 3-point range in the three-point loss to Indiana. Penn State couldn’t get anything to fall from deep.

  • No. 1 Kentucky finally made quick work of an SEC opponent with an 86-37 win over Missouri. Karl-Anthony Towns had 12 points and 10 rebounds to help pace the Wildcats.
  • No. 2 Virginia cruised to a 65-42 win over Clemson as Malcolm Brogdon had 16 points and Justin Anderson had 14 points.
  • Northern Iowa won a road game in the Valley with a 63-52 win over Bradley. Seth Tuttle led the No. 23 Panthers with 15 points.

NOTABLES


  • No. 6 Louisville ran past Virginia Tech as four starters finished in double figures and Chris Jones had 11 assists. Terry Rozier led the Cardinals with 16 points.
  • Ohio State throughly outplayed Michigan the night after winning the football national championship as D’Angelo Russell had 21 points, six assists, four steals and four steals.
  • Indiana’s Robert Johnson had 20 points as the freshman guard had a great game to lead the Hoosiers to a Big Ten win over Penn State.
  • Is Stephen F. Austin going on another winning streak. The Lumberjacks are up to 12 after 25 straight last season with an easy win over Central Arkansas.
  • Iowa moved to 3-1 in the Big Ten as Jarrod Uthoff had 22 points and made the game-winning jumper with 4 seconds left to beat Minnesota for a road win. Golden Gophers are 0-5 in the Big Ten.
  • Georgetown picked up a much-needed Big East road win at DePaul as D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera had 25 points to lead the Hoyas.
  • Texas A&M earned a SEC home win over Mississippi State as Alex Caruso had 21 points and Danuel House added 19 points.
  • Tyrone Johnson had 13 points to lead South Carolina over Alabama for an SEC win.
  • Tulsa is now 3-0 in the American after a win over UConn. Guard James Woodard had 21 points and six rebounds in the win.
