The recruitment of high school basketball prospects from Australia has picked up in recent years as college coaches try to bring over the next big international recruiting prize. LSU won the commitment of the biggest fish from the island continent when Ben Simmons committed in late 2013, but the Tigers were also involved with 6-foot-7 Class of 2015 wing Jack McVeigh, another talented Aussie.

But McVeigh opted to forge his own path, separate from Simmons, as he made a verbal commitment to Nebraska and head coach Tim Miles on Tuesday.

McVeigh was down to Nebraska and LSU and took official visits to both programs within the last week. The Huskers have an Australian connection in assistant coach Chris Harriman, who is a native of Sydney. During McVeigh’s official visit to Nebraska it was the first time he had ever seen snow, but that didn’t deter him from wanting to play in the Big Ten.

As for his accolades, McVeigh started making waves during the U18 Australian Junior Championships in 2012 and 2013. In 2012, McVeigh averaged 17.6 points and 12.4 rebounds per game playing for Queensland and he followed that up with averages of 24.3 points and 10.8 points per game in 2013.

McVeigh recently graduated from Lake Ginninderra in Canberra in December -- which is where Utah Jazz rookie Dante Exum came from -- but Jack will stay at the Australian Institute of Sport for the next six months, according to Ben Love of Tiger Sports Digest.

The captain of Australia’s U19 team, McVeigh missed qualifiers and was unable to attend because he got sick, but he’ll tryout for the team in April for the U19 World Championships in Greece.

Nebraska’s 2015 recruiting class was already off to a strong start as it features the four-star duo of Illinois natives Glynn Watson (point guard) and Edward Morrow (forward). Three-star Iowa native and forward Michael Jacobsen is also in the fold for the Huskers in 2015.
