UPDATE (Monday, 2:30 p.m.): St. John’s has confirmed that Rysheed Jordan has returned from his leave of absence and will rejoin the team for Tuesday’s game.

According to the school, he returned to Philly to be with his family following the death of his Grandmother. It had been reported that Jordan’s departure was the result of repeated disciplinary issues.

The news of sophomore point guard Rysheed Jordan taking a leave of absence from the St. John’s program on Friday, one day before their game against Butler, caught many by surprise. Jordan, who’s gone from starter to sixth man this season, gave the 15th-ranked Red Storm needed depth on the perimeter despite the fact that he hasn’t played as well since being moved to the reserve role by head coach Steve Lavin.

But given St. John’s overall lack of options, they need Jordan if they’re to be a factor in the Big East race and get back to the NCAA tournament. And according to a report by Jason King of Bleacher Report, Jordan may very well be on the court when St. John’s takes on No. 7 Villanova Tuesday night.

While there were reports of disciplinary matters being the reason for Jordan’s departure from the program, King provided a different reason: Jordan’s grandmother passed away Friday.

Zach Braziller of the New York Post also reported that Jordan will be joining the team but stated that the sophomore “could” play Tuesday, so it remains to be seen if the Philadelphia native will suit up and play. St. John’s played just three guards Saturday, with D’Angelo Harrison playing all 40 minutes and Phil Greene IV and Jamal Branch playing 37 and 34 minutes, respectively.
