GAME OF THE NIGHT: Cal 81, No. 21 Washington 75

You’d expect on a night that Tyrone Wallace shoots 4-of-20 from the field that No. 21 Washington would be able to get back into the win column. Remember, Jabari Bird is still out for the Golden Bears.

However, Jordan Mathews and David Kravish had their star guard covered, combining for 52 points in Cal’s 81-75 win over the Huskies at home on Friday night to kick off Pac-12 play. Despite not shooting well, Wallace was able to end with 19 points, doing most of his damage from the line, making 10 straight free throws with less than three minutes in regulation.

Washington has now lost two straight, following an upset loss to Stony Brook on Sunday. Won’t get easier for the Huskies, which travels to Stanford in two days.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

Stanford 71, Washington State 56

In their first game without freshman forward Reid Travis, the Cardinal won their Pac-12 opener over Washington State. Chasson Randle led with 18 points, followed by Stefan Nastic with 13 and Anthony Brown with 10. The 6-foot-8 Travis, who started every single game up until Friday for Stanford, is out indefinitely with a stress fracture.

Colorado 62, UCLA 56

Back spasms kept Josh Scott out of the lineup for the Buffalos, but Colorado was still able to prevail over UCLA in the Pac-12 opener. Askia Booker had 20 points and Xavier Johnson had 14 points. Things could have gone south for Colorado, allowing seven unanswered points to start the half, but the Buffs were able to erase the six-point deficit to recapture the lead with just over eight minutes to play. For UCLA, this is the fourth consecutive loss.

STARRED

Jordan Mathews, Cal: The sophomore guard was one point off his career-high, scoring 31 points in a win over No. 21 Washington. This was Tyrone Wallace’s worst shooting performance of the season (4-0f-20) and the Golden Bears needed Mathews’ offensive outburst on Friday night.

Khalil Felder, Oakland: A big Horizon League win for the Golden Grizzlies was led by Felder, who scored 32 points, 19 of which came from the free throw line. Felder attempted 24 free throws. Valpo, as a team, took 12.

Delon Wright, Utah: In a blowout win over USC, Wright went for 11 points and 10 assists (to just one turnover).

STRUGGLED

Bryce Alford, UCLA: For the first time all season Alford was held to under 10 points. The UCLA guard shot 2-of-16 (0-for-9 from three) in a loss to Colorado.

USC: It could be the start of a long conference season for the Trojans. In a 24-point win for No. 10 Utah, the Utes were able to shoot 57 percent from the field and 58 percent from beyond the arc.
