Earlier this month it was announced that sophomores Deonte Burton and John Dawson were leaving the Marquette program, and as a result first-year head coach Steve Wojciechowski is down to just eight available scholarship players. Saturday evening it was announced that one of those two players, Burton, has found a new home.

According to a report by Jon Rothstein of CBSSports.com Burton has decided to transfer to Iowa State, a program that has been highly successful with transfers under head coach Fred Hoiberg. Earlier in the week it was reported that Burton was considering the Cyclones and UCLA as possible destinations.

Burton played in eight games this season for Marquette, averaging 6.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in just over 16 minutes per contest. As a freshman the 6-foot-4 guard/forward averaged 6.9 points and 2.2 rebounds per game, playing 12.6 minutes per contest and shooting 47.8% from the field.

At the end of the current season Iowa State will have some departures to account for on the wings, and the addition of Burton would help in that regard. Burton is expected to be eligible in December 2015, and he’ll also be the second player on the Iowa State roster who has a prior stop at Marquette under his belt.

Jameel McKay, who scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in his first action in an Iowa State uniform Saturday, was briefly a member of the Marquette program last year (before practices officially began) before deciding to transfer to Iowa State.
