Texas lost some guard depth on Tuesday as sophomore guard Damarcus Croaker will transfer, the school announced. Croaker has been granted an unconditional release from the Longhorns. The news of Croaker’s transfer was first reported by ESPN‘s Jeff Goodman.
Even with the loss of starting point guard Isaiah Taylor to injury until at least the start of Big 12 play, the 6-foot-2 Croaker couldn’t crack the Longhorn rotation this season. The Florida native averaged 1.6 points and 1 rebound per game in 9.4 minutes of action per contest in 2014-15, but it’s noticeable that Croaker failed to enter Texas’ games against Iowa, Cal, UConn or Kentucky.
A former four-star recruit in the Class of 2013, Croaker is a former Murray State commit before he decommitted and eventually landed at Texas. Croaker could probably find a better fit at a lower level and it will be interesting to see if the Racers get back involved with a former pledge.
For Texas, this shouldn’t be a major loss. It probably hurts not to have Croaker as an extra guard in practice, but he wasn’t playing against the Longhorns’ best opponents and clearly wasn’t making a major impact during his sophomore year.
