Minnesota’s Daquein McNeil made his first appearance in court on Monday as he faces two felony charges stemming from an incident last week with a former girlfriend.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, McNeil will plead not guilty, but he was unable to post the $30,000 bail.

Head coach Richard Pitino has not announced anything official regarding McNeil’s future status with the program. Last week, athletic director Norwood Teague announced in a statement that McNeil would be “suspended from all team-related activities” and will remain suspended until the legal process plays out.

The allegations against McNeil are disturbing.

Prior to the team leaving for New York City for the Preseason NIT, McNeil went to the woman’s apartment to get a backpack he had left there. She was sleeping at the time, according to the statement for probable cause, and McNeil entered her bedroom with a cooking pan. He smashed a mirror, pulled out her drawers full of clothes and poured a bottle of alcohol over them. The woman’s roommate got McNeil to leave initially, but McNeil returned to the apartment after the roommate had left, and that’s when things allegedly got really ugly.

McNeil, according to the statement, ripped off the woman’s pants and begin pouring cold water over her. He held her against a wall and choked her, yelling “you ruined my life, now I’m going to ruin your’s.” After he released her, the woman tried to take a shower to warm up, and McNeil allegedly began whipping her with a wet towel and with his leather belt.
