Georgetown has an interesting plan to try and fill the Verizon Center while their students are on winter break this month: Living Social.

The school is offering a ‘Student for a Day’ package for home games against Charlotte (Dec. 20th) and Creighton (Jan. 3rd), which will allow anyone to get a seat in the student section -- lower levels behind the baskets -- for less than the price of a lower bowl ticket; it’s $15 to get in for the Charlotte game and $20 for the Creighton game.

If you get the package, you’ll also get a grey We Are Georgetown shirt that the students wear as well as a cheer sheet, a lanyard and a ‘Student of Georgetown Basketball’ degree.

The hope, according to Georgetown’s director of marketing, is to try and fill those seats with people that are going to embrace being as loud and as boisterous as a typical student section member.

You see, the issue of having a quiet arena is magnified for Georgetown games.

They already have issues filling the Verizon Center. The arena is located a couple miles from the school’s campus, a trip that can be amazingly difficult during rush hour, when fans would have to leave to make a 7 p.m. tip, as Georgetown is one of the only neighborhoods in D.C. without a metro stop. Georgetown is also a relatively small school -- when compared to other top 25 basketball programs -- in a city loaded with transient fans and folks that are ready and willing to spend that disposable income on tickets for the Redskins, Nationals, Capitals and Wizards.

And the Verizon Center is an NBA arena. Georgetown could bring in 10,000 fans and it will feel vacant in an 18,277 seat arena.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see if this idea works.
