After splitting their first two games of the 2014-15 season, the George Mason Patriots endured the kind of weekend that any college basketball program fears when participating in an in-season tournament. Paul Hewitt’s team dropped all three games at the Puerto Rico Tipoff, falling to 1-4 on the season.
That trip made Saturday’s game against Manhattan even more important for the Patriots. With 1:14 remaining George Mason trailed by eight and looked to be headed towards a fourth consecutive defeat, but they didn’t quit. George Mason chipped away at the deficit, and with three seconds remaining they trailed by just one after a Patrick Holloway three-pointer.
With Shane Richards at the line for two free throws, it appeared as if the best George Mason would be able to do was tie the game and head into overtime. However Richards missed the second free throw, and without any timeouts remaining the best George Mason would be to do was attempt a long heave.
Unfortunately for the Jaspers, the heave from 75 feet went in for George Mason’s Jalen Jenkins. Final score: George Mason 64, Manhattan 63.
