A crazy buzzer-beater from Division III is certainly worth watching, but this story is even more enticing after you read the ridiculous back story that is filled with odd coincidences.
Last night, Hampden-Sydney College knocked in a buzzer-beating three-pointer as guard Mike Murray stole an inbounds pass from the University of Mary Washington with his team trailing by two and watched as an improbable high bounce off the rim went his way to give his team a thrilling 58-57 victory.
Here’s video of Murray’s ridiculous game winner:
Crazy, right? An unbelievable play with shades of Cornell losing to Penn State earlier this week on a similar turnover mishap.
But that’s only where the story begins.
You see, last season these two teams also played and Hampden-Sydney made another buzzer-beating three-pointer to win that game by one point as well. That dagger came courtesy of Greg Lewis, who nailed a more traditional looking three-pointer to give Hampden-Sydney the 66-65 win over Mary Washington:
But the insane thing? Both of these game-winning, buzzer-beating three-pointers occurred on Nov. 22 to give Hampden-Sydney a one-point win. If I’m the University of Mary Washington, I would avoid scheduling this rematch on Nov. 22 at all costs. Find another opponent, plan a practice or pick another date to play Hampden-Sydney, but don’t do this to yourselves again, guys. The universe is clearly against you on this date.
