Forget a contract extension, San Diego State should turn Viejas Arena into a shrine to Steve Fisher.

That’s how much he’s meant to the Aztecs, turning the program from a doormat and an afterthought in the perpetually competitive Mountain West to a national power and perennial top 25 team. He should already have his name on the court.

But until the time comes to pay homage to Fisher and his accomplishments, the least the Aztecs can do is extend his contract, and that’s exactly what they will be doing today, according to a report from the AP.

Fisher is currently in the final year of a four-year deal, which will be extended for another three seasons, the report says. A news conference has been called at 2:30 p.m. ET to make it official.

Fisher, who is 69 years old, is in his 16th season as the coach of the Aztecs.
