Earlier this month, Oregon football received a verbal commitment from White Station High (Tennessee) 2016 wide receiver Dillon Mitchell. The 6-foot-1 wideout will also play basketball for the Ducks.

Mitchell is regarded as a three-star basketball recruit, according to Rivals.

This gives Dana Altman his first commitment in the Class of 2016, first reported by Andrew Nemec of the Oregonian as part of a live chat with Oregon football commits last week. Mitchell also tweeted that he’d be a dual-sport athlete on Saturday afternoon.

The two-sport four-star recruit represents the first known basketball commitment for the Ducks in the class of 2016, and it was one the coaching staff didn’t have to spend months battling to get.

“They talked to me about it while I was on my visit,” he said. “They didn’t want to pressure me into anything.”

Mitchell spent the summer with Team Penny in the Nike EYBL. Team Penny, coached by the former NBA All-Star Anfernee Hardaway, reached the Peach Jam championship game this past July. In 22 games in the EYBL, Mitchell averaged 6.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, playing alongside the likes of Florida commit Kevaughn Allen and Memphis pledges Dedric and K.J. Lawson.

His basketball options paled in comparison to the scholarship offers he had from football powers such Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
