Roy Williams has landed his first commitment since the Wainstein Report was released, as Luke Maye has committed to play his college ball at North Carolina.

Maye was ranked as the No. 145 player in the Class of 2015, according to Rivals, but he’s not the kind of big man we are used to seeing go to Carolina. He’s not a guy with measureables that are off the charts. He’s 6-foot-7 and a solidly-built 230 pounds. He doesn’t have long arms and he’s not a next-level athlete by any stretch. He’s not going to be confused with a Plumlee or Brice Johnson anytime soon.
That said, Maye is an excellent shooter with three-point range. He’s got good feet and great hands and understands positioning around the basket, which means that he should be an above-average rebounder even in the ACC. He picked North Carolina over Clemson and Davidson, but Maye was also recruited by Virginia, Notre Dame and Gonzaga at one time.
This shouldn’t be taken as a sign that UNC’s recruiting has not been affected the potential sanctions they are facing. Maye is a North Carolina native whose father played quarterback for the Tar Heels back in the 80s. This isn’t Williams beating out other blue bloods on an elite recruit, this is him accepting a commitment from a kid that could be a role player for the Heels in a few years.
UNC fans may remember a kid named Dave Neal that played for Maryland a few years ago, a slow, 6-foot-7 forward with three-point range that averaged 8.5 points as a senior. That’s who Maye could end up being at UNC.
