Last weekend Indiana sophomore forward Devin Davis was hospitalized after being hit by a car driven by teammate Emmitt Holt, and the Indianapolis native is still in a hospital recovering from the injuries suffered. Following the team’s 94-70 exhibition victory over Northwood Thursday night, which Davis’ father attended, Indiana head coach Tom Crean provided an update on the forward’s health.

“We know he’s in good hands up there. We know he’s improving,” Crean said according to the athletic department. “The whole medical team, the nurses, the attendants, everybody that’s been with him has been fantastic. I can say that on behalf of their family, and he’s dealing with some definite issues inside of his head. We’re dealing with a traumatic brain injury is what we’re dealing with.

“I’m not going to pretend to be a doctor and get specific on that, but I’ve not been given anything that leads me to believe that he will not continue to improve, and he’s definitely making progress, and every day it’s just it’s unbelievable to see it.”

Crean also noted in his postgame comments that Davis has been able to take walks down the hallway at the hospital, making two such trips on Wednesday.

In total Indiana was without six players for their exhibition, with freshmen Max Hoetzel and Jeremiah April dealing with injuries and Holt, Stanford Robinson and Troy Williams all being suspended.

UPDATE: Friday afternoon Indiana announced that Davis is expected to be released from the IU Health Bloomington Hospital and will continue his rehabilitation closer to Indianapolis.

“I am happy to report that Devin is making rapid progress towards his recovery. He is advancing rapidly in his rehabilitation. The Hoosier Nation would be proud of Devin,” team physician Dr. Larry Rink said in the statement released by the school.
