Old Dominion suspends three indefinitely for an altercation

Javonte Douglas

On Friday, a report surfaced that affects both the men’s and women’s basketball team at Old Dominion.

According to Harry Minium of the Virginia-Pilot, athletic director Wood Selig suspended three basketball players, Javonte Douglas from the men’s team and Galaisha Goodhope and Chelisa Painter from the women’s program. The reason for the suspensions stems from a physical confrontation inside a campus dormitory in late August, according to Minium.

“Based on recommendations from Coach Jeff Jones and Coach Karen Barefoot, I am accepting the indefinite suspension of Galaisha Goodhope, Chelisa Painter and Javonte Douglas from the women’s and men’s basketball teams respectively for violation of team rules,” Wood said in a statement.

Painter, the redshirt senior forward, is the Monarchs top returning scorer and rebounder at 8.9 points and 5.9 boards per game. Goodhope, a junior guard, led the team in assists last season. Both started 30 games for Old Dominion in 2013-2014.

Douglas is a junior college transfer by way of College of Central Florida. The 6-foot-7 wing had one of his dunks go viral back in early November when he cleared a defender on a tip-slam dunk.

All three are appealing the ruling. Goodhope is facing expulsion from the university, according to the report.

The Old Dominion men’s basketball team begins its 2014-2015 season on Nov. 15 against UNC Wilmington.
