Dayton was on the receiving end of some bad news Friday, as it was announced by the school that one of its freshmen won’t be allowed to play this season. Steve McElvene, a 6-foot-11 center, has been declared a partial qualifier by the NCAA, according to a school release. With that being the case McElvene can practice with the team but will not be allowed to play in games.

“We are disappointed for Steve, and of course Steve is very disappointed,” head coach Archie Miller said in the release. “But as a member of our team he will be involved in everything we do. This is a great opportunity for him to spend the next year to develop on and off the court to be the best player he can be at the start of next season, and prepare himself for a very successful college career.”

Not having McElvene is unfortunate for the Flyers, who won 26 games and reached the Elite Eight last season, but the good news for Dayton is that they return some notable front court options from their 2013-14 rotation. Among the front court players with experience at Miller’s disposal are juniors Dyshawn Pierre, Jalen Robinson and Devon Scott, and sophomore Kendall Pollard.

Pierre is one of two starters who return for Dayton, with guard Jordan Sibert being the other. Forward Devin Oliver and center Matt Kavananugh graduated at the end of the last season, and point guard Khari Price transferred to Southern Miss.
