Johnny Dawkins led Stanford to its first NCAA tournament during his tenure this past March. The long-awaited postseason appearance turned out to be a successful one as the No. 10 seeded Cardinal reached the Sweet 16 after upsetting New Mexico and Kansas.
Before the start of his seventh season the Stanford administration has decided to extend the contract of Dawkins. The school made the official announcement on Wednesday afternoon, but did not disclose the terms of the new deal.
“I want to thank athletic director Bernard Muir and the Stanford community for outstanding support and allowing our staff to do what we love,” Dawkins said in a statement. “Being part of the Stanford family is special and there is no place I’d rather be. We are committed to enhancing Stanford’s reputation of excellence in the classroom and on the court.”
In six seasons, Dawkins is 117-87 (49-59 Pac-12). Last season’s third-place finish in the Pac-12 was Stanford’s best under Dawkins.
The Cardinal could be set for another top-3 finish again this season, despite the loss of Josh Huestis and Dwight Powell on the interior. Stanford returns All-American candidate Chasson Randle, the team’s top scorer from a season ago at 18.8 points per game, Anthony Brown and Stefan Nastic. Stanford also brings in a recruiting class that features three, four-star recruits headlined by forwards Reid Travis and Michael Humphrey.
Stanford will open the season at home against Wofford on Nov. 14.
