Jon Octeus has been denied admission to UCLA after transferring to the Pac-12 program over the summer, according to a report from The Coloradoan.

A UCLA spokesman told NBCSports earlier on Monday that he was not able to comment on Octeus at this time as NCAA rules forbid them from discussing players that hadn’t signed with the school. Octeus had not been listed on UCLA’s roster.

Octeus had transferred to UCLA after leaving Colorado State, where he averaged 13.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists as a junior in 2013-2014. He was expected to come in and, at the very least, compete with Bryce Alford for the starting point guard spot.

The timing of this announcement puts Octeus in a bad spot. UCLA is on the quarter system, and their fall classes don’t begin until September 29th. Most schools have already been in session for at least a couple of weeks.

It’s also bad news for the Bruins as this amounts to the second recruit that they have lost in the span of four days. On Friday, news broke that Jonah Bolden, a four-star forward, was a partial qualifier and would be ineligible to play this season. The Bruins still have talent on their roster and still should be able to compete for second place in the Pac-12, behind Arizona, but this is a major blow to their depth and creates a serious red flag at the point guard spot.

Without Octeus in the picture, UCLA head coach Steve Alford, Bryce’s dad, will have a decision to make: hand the reins over to his son or try to teach Isaac Hamilton, who say out last season, to learn to play the point guard spot. Neither option is ideal.
