The process of rebuilding a struggling program can be a difficult one for a new head coach, especially when it comes to hitting the recruiting trail hard for the players that would best fit what they’re trying to do. Boston College head coach Jim Christian’s highest amount of success this spring/summer came with transfers (center Idrissa Diallo is BC’s lone freshman), which isn’t all that surprising when considering the fact that he was hired less than two weeks before the start of the spring signing period.

That makes the Class of 2015 an important one for Boston College, and on Sunday evening the Eagles landed their first verbal commitment in the form of 6-foot-4 shooting guard Matt Milon. The news was first reported by Adam Finkelstein of ESPN.com, with Milon tweeting the news himself shortly thereafter.

As a junior at Oviedo HS in Oviedo, Florida Milon averaged 18.3 points per game, leading his team to a 27-4 record and the Class 7A state title. As a result Milon earned Florida Class 7A Player of the Year honors, and he was also a finalist for Florida Mr. Basketball with North Carolina freshman Joel Berry winning the award for the third consecutive year.

Boston College enters the 2014-15 season with six seniors at the shooting guard and small forward positions, including graduate transfers Dmitri Batten (from Old Dominion) and Aaron Brown (Southern Miss). In total BC has eight scholarship seniors on this year’s roster, and junior guard Olivier Hanlan considered entering the NBA Draft at the end of last season before deciding to return to school.

As a result, it’s quite apparent that Boston College will be busy on the recruiting trail. Adding Milon to the program is a good start, but with Boston College fans hopeful that he’ll be joined by some talented teammates in the coming months.
