Karl-Anthony Towns, one of stars of Kentucky’s 2014 recruiting class, will not play for the Dominican Republic in the 2014 basketball World Cup.

Towns has been a part of the Dominican men’s national team for years, since John Calipari was the head coach. But now that Towns is in his first season at Kentucky, Cal and the University reportedly¬†decided that they did not want him to attend the event, which will be held in Spain from August 30th through September 14th.

Kentucky played the Dominican Republic twice during their trip to the Bahamas. They went 1-1 in the two games, with the loss coming in their finale on a buzzer-beater.

The Dominican team is coached by former Kentucky assistant and current South Florida head coach Orlando Antigua.
