Jayson Tatum scored 19 points and Malik Newman added 15 points and six assists as Team USA advanced past the Japanese and into the quarterfinals of the U17 FIBA World Championships with a 122-38 win on Tuesday morning.
The final score was 122-38.
And you thought the 60 point win over the Phillippines on Monday was bad? Japan was down 41-6 after the first quarter.
There are some good teams in this U17 tournament — the Americans only beat Greece by ten in the opening round — but there are quite a few countries in the world where their basketball simply cannot compete with ours. China should give the US more of a test, although the Americans will still be heavy favorites. China has lost to Argentina and Serbia but they beat Egypt and, on Tuesday, bet Italy.
The quarterfinals will resume on Thursday, August 13th.
