Kansas was selected to represent the United States in the 2015 World University Games, the school announced during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

The United States International University Sports Federation (US-IUSF) picked the Jayhawks to compete in the games, which will take place July 3-14 in Gwangju, Korea.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said on Tuesday. “It is a unique opportunity where a school will represent our country in the World University Games as opposed to a select team. I can’t see anything but positives. We as an amateur basketball team could not get better competition. Our players are really excited about getting the opportunity to represent our country in games basically against professionals from around the world.”

Typically, the United States is represented by a collection of college players. In 2013 -- the World University Games is a biannual event -- Davidson head coach Bob McKillop coached a team that included future National Player of the Year Doug McDermott, projected first rounder Adreian Payne and AP first-team All-American Sean Kilpatrick.

The World University Games are played under FIBA rules, meaning games will be played in 10-minute quarters, using a 24-second shot clock. The format of the tournament begins in pool play with 24 teams divided into six groups. The top two teams from each group advance into bracket play.
