Michigan State picked up its second verbal commitment in the 2015 class Thursday night, as 6-foot-5 shooting guard Kyle Ahrens made his pledge to Tom Izzo’s program at the end of his official visit. Ahrens hails from Versailles, Ohio, where he scored 24 points per game at Versailles High School as a junior.

Ahrens, regarded as a four-star prospect by Scout.com and a three-star prospect by 247Sports, joins 6-foot-9 power forward Deyonta Davis in Michigan State’s 2015 recruiting haul. In an interview with Kyle Austin of MLive.com, Ahrens noted how close the players and coaches are as one of the key reasons why he chose Michigan State.

“They’re like a family,” Ahrens told Austin. “They’re all so close, and how the coaching staff is joking with each other and how they’re having fun, always challenging each other. They’re always making it fun, making me feel part of that family.”

Ahrens, who has been praised by scouts for his shooting ability, returned to the court this spring for the King James Shooting Stars after missing most of the 2013-14 season due to his breaking both the fibula and tibia in his left leg during a game. At the end of the 2014-15 season the Spartans will lose seniors Branden Dawson and Travis Trice, which will leave Denzel Valentine and Matt Costello as the team’s most experienced players.

Michigan State has signed a three-member recruiting class for the upcoming season: guards Lourawls Nairn and Javon Bess, and forward Marvin Clark.
