Reports: Marshall transfer Kareem Canty commits to South Florida

Kareem Canty

First-year head coach Orlando Antigua scored a major transfer on Sunday in former Marshall point guard Kareem Canty, who committed to South Florida after a series of visits to high-major programs.

Evan Daniels of Scout.com was the first to report the transfer.

Canty averaged 16.3 points and 5.5 assists per game for the Thundering Herd this past season, and received his release from Marshall on April 11. In less than 10 days, he had been linked to Auburn and new head coach Bruce Pearl. Although, Canty wanted to visit South Florida and Penn State (he had also scheduled a trip to UNLV for May 12-14) before making a final choice.

South Florida, a team that lost six players since the end of the season, has added three members to it’s incoming class since the start of this month. On May 3, the Bulls received commitments from Nehemias Morillo and Ruben Guerrero.

Landing Canty secures the point guard position for Antigua. Freshman Josh Heath transferred shortly after his father, Stan, was relieved of his head coaching duties. Also, Anthony Collins has only one year of eligibility remaining, leaving the program in the hands of Canty for the start of 2015-2016 season.

Canty was the best available transfer.
