Former USF guard Josh Heath transferring to Georgia Tech

Josh Heath

With his father Stan no longer the head coach at USF, point guard Josh Heath made the decision to transfer in late March. And according to a report from Joey Johnston of the Tampa Tribune Josh has found a new school, as he’ll be transferring to Georgia Tech.

Heath, who was originally expected to redshirt, saw more playing time than expected due to the health of starting point guard Anthony Collins. Heath played in just 17 games but averaged 20 minutes per contest, accounting for 2.6 points and 3.6 assists per game with the latter number ranking second on the team.

In theory Heath would have to sit out the 2014-15 season per NCAA transfer rules, but the case of former Pitt guard Trey Zeigler raises the question of whether or not Georgia Tech should consider applying for a waiver on Heath’s behalf. Zeigler transferred to Pitt in 2012 following the firing of his father at Central Michigan, receiving a waiver to play immediately in a decision that surprised many.

As for Georgia Tech, the addition of Heath gives head coach Brian Gregory some additional depth at the position with Corey Heyward and Travis Jorgenson (he played in just four games due to a torn ACL) being the other options. Solomon Poole was dismissed from the team in early February.
