Head coach Tommy Amaker to remain at Harvard

When the Boston College head coaching position became open, one of the first names bandied about in basketball circles was that of Harvard head coach Tommy Amaker. Having led the Crimson to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, the veteran coach has become a prominent figure in coaching carousel-related discussions as he’s led a once-moribund program to the top of the Ivy League.

However the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, and Saturday evening the school announced that Amaker has decided that he won’t be going anywhere this offseason.

“After thoughtful deliberation, I continue to realize my heart is at Harvard,” Amaker said in the release. “To teach, lead and serve at this amazing institution, and in this special community, is truly meaningful to me.”

In seven seasons at Harvard, Amaker has amassed a record of 139 wins and 71 losses, winning at least 21 games in each of the last five seasons. And with regards to Boston College, Harvard has beaten the Eagles in each of the last six meetings.

The Crimson loses seniors Kyle Casey, Brandyn Curry and Laurent Rivard, but all other members of the rotation including guard Siyani Chambers and forwards Steve Moundou-Missi and Wesley Saunders will be back in 2014-15. Harvard will once again be favored to win the Ivy League and reach the NCAA tournament as a result.
