Late Night Snacks: Indiana, Oregon continue in wrong direction

crean

GAME OF THE NIGHT: UCLA 70, Oregon 68

It wasn’t pretty but the matchup between the Bruins and Ducks didn’t lack for drama. Travis Wear’s basket with 5.3 seconds remaining proved to be the difference as UCLA moved into sole possession of second place in the Pac-12. Wear (12 points) was one of three Bruins to score in double figures, with Jordan Adams and Norman Powell scoring 19 and 17, respectively.

Joseph Young (25 points) and Jason Calliste (21) scored well for Oregon but neither got the final shot of the game, with Johnathan Loyd’s jumper being blocked by Kyle Anderson as time expired. In a game that showcased two teams that are inconsistent when it comes to sharing the basketball it was UCLA who escaped with the win, dropping Oregon to 2-6 in Pac-12 play.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

1) No. 13 Cincinnati 69, No. 12 Louisville 66

Cincinnati’s veterans did what needed to be done down the stretch as the Bearcats opened a two-game lead in the American standings with a win at Louisville. Sean Kilpatrick scored 28 points to lead the way, with fellow seniors Justin Jackson and Titus Rubles proving valuable as well. As for the Cardinals, they’re still searching for another quality resume-building win, with their best result to this point in the season being a win at UConn.

2) Nebraska 60, Indiana 55

After leading by 13 points at the half Indiana was outscored by 18 in the game’s final 20 minutes, dropping a game they looked to be in control of as a result. Terran Petteway led four Huskers in double figures with 18 points, and while this is a good result for Nebraska the same can’t be said for the Hoosiers. And given their overall resume, Indiana finds itself in need of some quality wins as the calendar approaches February.

3) Marquette 61, Providence 50

Speaking of resumes, it can be argued that Providence’s took a hit with their loss at Marquette. Davante Gardner scored 14 points and Jamil Wilson added 11 for the Golden Eagles, who moved to 4-4 in Big East play with the win. As for the Friars, they shot 2-for-14 from three and were unable to do enough to erase a cold first half shooting performance. With their next two games against DePaul and St. John’s, Ed Cooley’s team may want to avoid dropping either as those games will do more harm to their resume.

STARRED

1) Killian Larson (Grand Canyon)

28 points and 20 rebounds in the Antelopes’ 76-75 win at Chicago State.

2) Tyler Haws (BYU)

38 points (12-for-20 FG) in the Cougars’ 88-78 win over Pacific.

3) Zaid Hearst (Quinnipiac)

33 points (11-for-18 FG), six rebounds and four assists in the Bobcats’ 86-74 loss to Canisius.

STRUGGLED

1) Saint Mary’s players other than Brad Waldow

Remove Waldow’s 6-for-12 night from the field and the Gaels shot 7-for-40 from the field in their 61-43 loss at San Diego.

2) Chattanooga players other than Casey Jones

Jones shot 7-for-12 from the field. His teammates shot 9-for-37, resulting in the Mocs’ 94-51 loss at Davidson.

3) Houston

The Cougars shot 18-for-66 from the field and 5-for-12 from the foul line in an 80-43 loss at UConn.
