Two days after picking up an important road win at Wright State, Brian Wardle’s Green Bay Phoenix found themselves on the ropes at UIC on Sunday afternoon. Despite being 4-0 in Horizon League play the Phoenix struggled with the winless (in conference play) Flames…until guard Keifer Sykes got going.
Alec Brown led the way with 23 points but it was Sykes, who scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half, who proved to be the spark the Phoenix needed to come from behind for the 69-64 victory. Four of those points can be seen in the video above.
But pay close attention to the first dunk, a designed alley-oop against the UIC 2-3 zone, and keep in mind the fact that Sykes is 5-foot-11. How many 5-foot-11 guards in college basketball today can have set plays like that one called for them, and finish with that kind of authority? Not many.
Now 5-0 in Horizon League play, Green Bay maintained their two-game lead in the loss column with Sunday’s victory.
