The high-octane Oakland Grizzlies offense took a hit on Tuesday, as head coach Greg Kampe put out a short, two sentence release announcing that guard Ryan Bass would be leaving the team due to “reasons unrelated to his athletic participation or academic performance.”
Bass, a 5-foot-9 senior, averaged 9.3 points and 2.7 assists as a junior.
The Grizzlies still return quite a bit of firepower as they embark on their first season in the Horizon League. Travis Bader, who averaged 22.1 points and has a shot to set the NCAA record for threes this season, is back, as is big man Corey Petros and Providence transfer Duke Mondy.
But Oakland was not a deep team to begin with, and not only did they lose Bass, but center Raphael Carter underwent surgery on an arthritic condition in his hip and will not play this year, either.
