College hoops double header set for MSG on eve of the Super Bowl?

Could there be a college hoops double header at Madison Square Garden scheduled for the day before the Super Bowl?

According to Diamond Leung at MLive.com, that is certainly looking like a possibility as he’s reporting that a Big East conference clash between St. John’s and Marquette will be followed by an intriguing mid-conference-season non-conference clash between Georgetown and Michigan State.

Georgetown Athletic Director Lee Reed also hinted at the matchup on Twitter and the February 1st double header would then be followed the Miami Heat facing the New York Knicks before the Super Bowl kicks off the next day in New Jersey.

As if a Super Bowl weekend weren’t busy enough for sports fans already, this potential basketball triple header at Madison Square Garden would give visiting fans of New York an alternative sports option besides all of the hoopla surrounding the biggest sporting event of the year.

St. John’s and Marquette already played to an overtime thriller last year at Madison Square Garden -- so that rematch is intriguing enough as it is -- but when you add a February non-conference clash between two powerhouse programs like Michigan State and Georgetown it only adds to the excitement and forms a great afternoon of college basketball.

LeBron vs. Melo in the nightcap is only icing on the cake.
