It was initially feared that Rodney Hood’s Achilles’ tendon might be torn after injuring it at the USA Basketball tryouts for the World University Games, but the Duke University medical staff on Friday released their diagnosis and Hood will only miss 4-to-6 weeks of action because of a strain in the soft tissue of his right Achilles’ tendon.

The official diagnosis from the Duke medical staff -- courtesy of the Durham Herald-Sun --deemed that the injury will require no surgery for the 6'8 redshirt sophomore forward, as a key piece to Duke’s season looks to be on track to play in 2013-14.

“The injury is not believed to be serious but it will require the proper rest and treatment to heal completely,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said to the Herald-Sun. “Rodney is in good spirits and we’re excited to know that he’ll be healthy and ready to go in 2013-14.”

Although initially reported by the Herald-Sun through Hood’s father that the injury was likely not a tear, the official diagnosis and timeframe for Hood’s return places him on track to be back sooner than many had anticipated as he should be fully healthy for the upcoming season.

Hood sat out all of last season after transferring to Duke from Mississippi State, where he averaged 10.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and earned SEC All-Freshman Team honors.
