CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Robert Johnson wasn’t the biggest name among guards heading into the NBPA Top 100 Camp, but the Virginia-native played well throughout the camp and will be a player to watch this summer when coaches are out in full force.
In fact, Johnson currently isn’t rated in Rivals’ Top 150 for the class of 2014, but he was merely concerned with playing hard at the camp and not worried about rankings.
“I’ve just tried to soak everything up, there’s a lot of good guards here so I’m just trying to go out and compete on every play,” Johnson told NBC Sports. “I’m not trying to prove anything, I’m just trying to go out there and compete and show that I’m as good as any guard that’s here.”
Also aiding in Johnson’s development and confidence as a point guard was working on extra sessions with NBA veteran point guard Andre Miller. Johnson often sought out Miller’s advice and got in some extra work with him before camp would begin each day.
“I’ve worked with Andre Miller and he’s shown me a lot of things in the morning before camp begins,” Johnson said. “It means everything. He’s been there and done what we want to accomplish. If you just listen to him, it’ll really help your game.”
Johnson doesn’t have many of the elite schools in the country taking notice, but he does have his fair share of perennial power programs. Florida State, Villanova, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, East Carolina, Alabama, Seton Hall, Tennessee, and Rutgers were programs that Johnson mentioned were involved in his current recruitment and only Alabama and Rutgers have yet to offer.
There are also a few schools currently recruiting him harder than the others.
“I’d probably say Villanova, Wake Forest and Alabama (are on me the hardest),” Johnson said.
This week, Johnson will also see a few campuses for unofficial visits, including one of the schools currently on him the hardest — Villanova.
“I’m taking an unofficial to Seton Hall and Villanova on the 26th,” Johnson said. “I know there’s a good winning tradition at Villanova and they have a lot of good guards; guards that were similar to the way that I play and my size so I think that’s a good opportunity.”
