It’s been a rough spring for Jerome Seagears.

First, video of Mike Rice, his then-head coach at Rutgers, found its way onto ESPN’s Outside The Lines, which resulted in Rice and his AD Tim Pernetti being fired by the University. As a result, Seagears made the decision to transfer out of the program, eventually settling on Auburn as the place to continue his hoops career.

That seemed like a decent destination for the Silver Spring, MD, native, until Monday afternoon, when it was announced that Seagears, who has yet to hear whether or not he will be allowed to play immediately, will be leaving Auburn after just over a month.

“Jerome came to me and expressed that he hadn’t truly recovered emotionally from his time at Rutgers,” Auburn coach Tony Barbee said in a statement. “It is important to him that he continues his academic and athletic career closer to home where he can be near his immediate family and get the support system that he needs.”

Seagears averaged 6.5 points and 2.6 assists last year for Rutgers. He had a number of high-major programs interested in him when he announced his transfer, but it will be interesting to see if he ends up there or at a place closer to home.
