VCU and head coach Shaka Smart promoted from within when filling the vacancy left on their coaching staff this week as Director of Basketball Operations Mike Morrell was announced by the school as the new assistant men’s basketball coach.

Morrell replaces departed assistant coach Will Wade -- who left VCU to become the head coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga -- and served as VCU’s Director of Basketball Operations for two seasons, helping in day-to-day duties such as the scheduling of practices and games and booking travel accommodations.

“I couldn’t be more excited for the chance to stay a part of this program and continue to help develop our student-athletes here at VCU,” Morrell said. “I appreciate the opportunity that Coach Smart has given me and look forward to helping this program reach even greater heights.”

Morrell does have previous experience as an assistant coach at the Division I level, having previously served as an assistant at Charleston Southern, where he helped recruit the south.

VCU head coach Shaka Smart and Morrell also worked together under Oliver Purnell’s tenure at Clemson during the 2007-08 season, when Smart was an up-and-coming assistant coach.

“Mike has been a valuable member of our staff for the past two years,” Smart said. “We’re excited about him assuming this new role.”
