The Jud Heathcote tribute was an awesome idea for an event, but it is going to remain just that: an idea.
According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, scheduling and logistical issues have gotten in the way:ESPN.com reported today that Washington State had taken care of a scheduling conflict to be able to participate, but the event was shelved for good later in the day.
Scheduling, arena availability and financial arrangements were hurdles. MSU originally tried to schedule the event for opening weekend in November.
The plan was for Gonzaga to play Michigan State and Montana to play Washington State in Spokane. Heathcote currently lives in Spokane and is a mentor to Gonzaga head coach Mark Few. Before he took over the Michigan State program, he was an assistant at Washington State and the head coach at Montana.
I have a feeling that this won’t be the last time we hear about this event, but as of now, it won’t be happening in 2013-2014.
