The road back was a long and arduous one for Indiana guard Maurice Creek, who missed all or part of three seasons due to various injuries before finally getting cleared for the 2012-13 season.

But Creek didn’t see much playing time last season, playing in 24 games and averaging just 7.8 minutes per contest for the Big Ten regular season champions.

Yet despite roster turnover that includes the departure of guards Jordan Hulls and Victor Oladipo, Creek has made the decision to transfer to another school after completing his undergraduate studies next week.

The news was first reported by Zach Osterman of InsideIndiana.com and later confirmed in a statement released by Indiana. According multiple reports Creek and his family hope to find a school close to his hometown of Oxon Hill, Md.

“With his graduation coming up next week, Maurice and his family have decided to pursue an opportunity where he can find the type of role that would provide him the minutes he desires and is accustomed to,” said Crean. “In all my time as a coach, I have never witnessed someone overcoming the adversity that Maurice had sustained during his time. His attitude, ability to continue to work and his passion for the game of basketball have never wavered. He has been an integral part of our basketball family and will always remain that in our eyes and and should also in the eyes of Hoosier Nation.”

Creek’s most notable moment came during his freshman season when he scored 31 points against Kentucky. But his 2009-10 campaign would end after just 12 games due to a fractured kneecap, and after working hard to return to the court his sophomore campaign was cut short after 18 games due to a stress fracture in his knee.

And if those two injury-shortened seasons weren’t tough enough Creek had to redshirt last season after rupturing his Achilles a month prior to the start of the season.

Creek’s departure leaves Indiana with just two scholarship guards heading into the 2013-14 season: rising sophomore point guard Yogi Ferrell and incoming freshman Stanford Robinson.

As a graduate student Creek will be eligible to play immediately at his next school, and given all he’s been through in his four years of college basketball hopefully Creek remains healthy throughout the season.
