Former Duke captain Phil Henderson has died

Phil Henderson

Former Duke leading scorer Phil Henderson has passed away at the age of 44, the school announced Monday.

“On behalf of the entire Duke Basketball family, we are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Phil Henderson,” Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to his mom and family. Phil was a talented player and a good man with a gentle soul. We will miss him dearly.”

Henderson led Duke in scoring during the 1989-90 season and was a senior captain on that team, which reached the Final Four. He averaged 18.5 points per game as a senior and dunked on Georgetown great Alonzo Mourning in a regional win over the Hoyas.

After his career with the Blue Devils concluded, he entered the 1990 NBA Draft and was selected by the Dallas Mavericks. He went on to play internationally.
