Northwestern’s Drew Crawford out for year after shoulder surgery

Drew Crawford

Northwestern will be without guard Drew Crawford for the remainder of the 2012-13 season after the senior undergoes shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum, coach Bill Carmody announced Friday.

“Drew’s situation is similar to Tre Demps’ a year ago,” Carmody said in a statement. “Drew aggravated a previous injury in early September and attempted to play through it, but it just hasn’t responded as we all would have liked.

“While it obviously hurts to lose a player of Drew’s caliber, it provides an opportunity for his teammates to step up and contribute.”

Because he has only taken part in 10 games this season, Crawford is eligible to apply for an injury waiver from the NCAA. This would grant him another year of eligibility once he recovers from surgery.

Crawford has been the Wildcats’ second-leading scorer this season, averaging 13.5 points and 4.6 rebounds. He was a All-Big Ten Third Team selection last season and is 10th in Northwestern history with 1,418 career points.
