Former Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun will make his first appearance as a radio color commentator Friday night, agreeing to provide insight for the UConn Radio Network during the Huskies’ match-up with Michigan State in the Armed Forces Classic.

Alongside Connecticut play-by-play man Joe D’Ambrosio, Calhoun will broadcast from Ramstein Air Base in Germany, the site of the first annual event.

Calhoun retired in September after 26 seasons at Connecticut. In August, he suffered a fractured hip in a bicycle accident that required surgery and forced him onto crutches.

Connecticut now begins its first season under former assistant Kevin Ollie, an alumnus of the school and former stand-out in the Huskies’ program in the 1990s.

According to the Associated Press, Calhoun’s radio appearance is a special case and there are no immediate plans to have him remain on the broadcast. The man who typically sits in Calhoun’s place, Wayne Norman, will be in Connecticut calling UConn’s football game against Pittsburgh Friday night.

The Armed Forces Classic tips off around 5:30 p.m. Friday.
