The question of whether or not highly talented wing Andrew Wiggins would remain in the 2014 class or reclassify to 2013 is one that’s hung over the recruiting world for quite some time.
We’ve got our answer, as it’s been reported by multiple outlets that the Huntington Prep star has made the move back to the 2013 class.
As was the case with Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel when he made a similar move (to 2012) in the spring, look for Wiggins to be placed atop many recruiting analysts’ 2013 rankings.
Huntington Prep head coach Rob Fulford confirmed the news on Twitter.
“Obviously it’s been the question of the summer,” Fulford said. “Our stance from the get go would be that we would support Andrew’s decision in whatever direction he decided. But this is the smart decision for him.”
“His grades are good and he has enough credits,” the Huntington Prep coach continued. “We’ll just have to enroll him in an additional English course so he can graduate on time.”
The news comes just hours after Wiggins’ father Mitchell, who played eight seasons in the NBA, told Eric Prisbell of USA Today that the time had come for Andrew to make the move.
The obvious question now is who the favorite is to land Wiggins, with many under the assumption that it’s a two-horse race between Florida State (both parents attended FSU) and Kentucky.
But with the Wildcats landing the players that they have in the 2013 class thus far, other schools (North Carolina, Kansas, Ohio State and Syracuse) reportedly began to ramp up their pursuit of Wiggins.
It’s become quite obvious over the last three seasons that John Calipari can get highly talented prospects to coexist, so to hope that Wiggins would be concerned about joining UK’s loaded class may be a pipe dream.
But when considering just how talented the wing from Canada is it’s certainly worth a shot.
