5-star guard Anthony ‘Cat’ Barber reportedly commits to Mark Gottfried and NC State

Mark Gottfried bolstered his future backcourt in the Class of 2012 by adding Rodney Purvis and Tyler Lewis, and Saturday brought news of another major addition, this from the Class of 2013.

Point guard Anthony “Cat” Barber of Hampton HS (Va.) and Boo Williams AAU committed to NC State, according to Rivals.com site The Wolfpacker.

Barber is currently on an official visit to NC State, where Gottfried secured his commitment.

“Out of all the visits I’ve been too, this felt like the most comfortable spot for me,” Barber told the site. “This is where I wanted to be.”

Barber is a lightning-quick Top-10 prospect, one of the fastest guards in the country who is also now developing a strong mid-range game. Playing alongside fellow Top-50 prospect Troy Williams, Boo Williams AAU competed on the Nike EYBL circuit this past summer.

Gottfried has been a recruiting force since being hired at NC State, bringing in three McDonald’s All-Americans from 2012 and now beginning the 2013 class with a Top-10 prospect in Barber.

Barber’s biggest asset is his speed, likely fitting in well with NC State’s up-tempo style, getting out on the break and finding open teammates in the scattered court.

He led Hampton to a Virginia Group AAA state championship last season, on his way to averaging 21.5 points per game.
