Shaka Smart, fresh off of a run to the NCAA tournament and preparing for his first season in a new conference, is set to host a coaching clinic on Oct. 20, 2012.

From the school’s press release:

The clinic begins with a VCU practice at the Franklin Street Gym practice facility. After breaking for lunch, the participants will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers, which include Smart himself, John Thompson, long-time head coach at North Carolina Wesleyan, and former South Carolina and Western Kentucky Head Coach Darrin Horn.

Horn, before moving to take the job at Western Kentucky, was at South Carolina. Former Kansas State coach Frank Martin has since replaced him.

Smart has had success on the recruiting of late, reeling in a late 2012 signee in former Miami commit Melvin Johnson, as well as 2013 prospects Jairus Lyles and Antravious Simmons.

The Rams move to the Atlantic 10 for the start of the 2012-13 season, joining Butler as a newcomer to the league.

As the Smart Coaching Clinic press release touts, the Rams’ head coach has the second-highest win total for a coach in his first three seasons ever, 84. He led the Rams to the Final Four in his second year, 2010-11, one year after leading the school to a CBI title.
