Leonard Washington reinstated to Wyoming team

x610-81

Leonard Washington was the most important player on Wyoming’s team last season.

He led the Cowboys in scoring and rebounding and eventually earned second-team all-Mountain West honors as he began to rebuild his image after flaming out at USC. With three starters from last season’s breakout Wyoming team graduating, Washington became that much more valuable to second-year head coach Larry Shyatt.

But Washington’s future in Wyoming was in doubt heading into the start of the school year. Back in May, Washington was given a one month suspended sentence pending a year of probation and a $530 fine stemming from a fight back in April. Washington was charged with criminal entry and battery after entering a house and hitting one of its occupants.

It looks like Washington has paid his debt to Shyatt, however.

“Leonard has met our criteria for earning his way back onto this team and has done everything Athletics Director Tom Burman and I have asked of him,” Wyoming coach Larry Shyatt said. “We are pleased that he will have the opportunity to earn his degree this spring and look forward to him continuing to help this team.”

His return is significant, but with the strength at the top of the MWC, adding a first-team all-conference talent still may not be enough to get the Cowboys into the top half of the league.
