Since it no longer involves the high-powered programs in the conferences that generate the 10-figure TV deals, conference realignment has fallen off of the national radar of late.
But that doesn’t mean it’s over.
According to Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News, the CAA athletic directors will meet with members of the conference staff to discuss to future of the league on Friday. Currently, the league has nine current members, as Old Dominion (Conference USA), VCU (Atlantic 10) and Georgia State (Sun Belt) have all left in recent months. The discussions, according to DeCourcy, will center around whether the league will be expanding at all, and if they do, whether the final number will be 12, 14, or 16.
The names that are mentioned as potential replacements -- Davidson, College of Charleston, Stony Brook -- should come as no surprise to anyone that’s been following the story this summer. But DeCourcy does make an interesting point about some of the programs currently in the CAA:
Once again, it’s football that’s controlling the way the national hoops landscape looks.
