The sentencing of former Oklahoma State forward Darrell Williams, who was found guilty of two counts of rape by instrumentation and one count of sexual battery on July 23, has been delayed until September 14.
Williams’ attorneys filed a motion for a new trial on Thursday, citing what they believe to be errors in the original trial, and both sides will be given time to prepare for the appeal process.
There has been a groundswell of support for Williams in the aftermath of his conviction, including Rev. Jesse Jackson’s recent visit to Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Stillwater.
Williams issued a statement in the pre-sentencing investigation, which read as follows:“My future goals are to graduate from college and to get my degree. I also had goals to take care of my mother and my family. I was one of the few to really do something with my life in my family so I was trying to make my mom proud. I also had goals to put my daughter in the best situation possible. Because growing up I never had my father in my life so everything I was doing was because her and my family. I know now things will be very difficult to do so.
Growing up my mom work so hard trying to take care 4 kids by herself, she had no help and use to cry when she did not have money to put food in our house and being young I never understood but when I got older I figure it out and I made a promise to myself that I would take care of my mom so she wouldn’t never have to work again so I use basketball to help that happen.
