Rodney Purvis cleared to take classes at NC State, basketball eligibility still to be determined

NC State guard Rodney Purvis got a bit of good news from the NCAA clearinghouse Monday, but he is not where the Wolfpack would like him just yet.

According to The News & Observer, Purvis is cleared to attend classes at NC State, which began last week, but is not yet cleared to play basketball for the Wolfpack.

Purvis was kept out of a team trip to Spain earlier this month as the NCAA continued to work through his eligibility paperwork. Had he attended classes at their start last week, he would have been deemed a non-qualifier and ineligible to play for NC State this season.

The NCAA is still reviewing the courses Purvis took from Upper Room Christian Academy (N.C.), the school from which he graduated. He was part of the first graduating class to come from the private institution.

Purvis is a Top-25 player in the Class of 2012 and is part of a loaded three-man recruiting class coming to coach Mark Gottfried’s team.

Along with Purvis, guard Tyler Lewis and forward TJ Warren join the team, all three having been McDonald’s All-Americans this past season.

NC State is coming off a 24-13 season in which they advanced all the way to the Sweet 16 before losing to Kansas.

With this recruiting class and the pieces returning to the team from last season, and hopefully Purvis in the starting lineup, the Wolfpack are looking to challenge for the ACC title in 2012-13.
