Matt Doherty, NC State, and a white beard?

tLc7ruJY

By now, you all should be up to date on what’s going on with the academic scandal at North Carolina.

If you missed it, it’s simple. The Tar Heels allegedly had a system set up where they could funnel their players in danger of becoming academically ineligible into classes and a major where they could go all Wolfgang Puck on their academic transcripts. The football team has had the most smoke surrounding them, but it’s pretty clear from reports that the basketball team has been far from innocent in the matter. It just so happens that the one guy whose transcript was left online played on both the football and basketball teams.

That one guy was Julius Peppers. And Matt Doherty, who coached Peppers during his time at UNC, took to twitter to defend.

And drop a couple of one-liners on the good folks at NC State. Frankly, it’s awesome:

Julius Peppers was one of the smartest players I ever coached. He remembered plays better than anyone. He was a good person and a worker...

...I wish I had a team full of players like Julius Peppers! — Matt Doherty (@DohertyMatt) August 21, 2012

Doing poorly in school doesn’t mean you are dumb. See Steve Jobs, Bill Gates. Both college drop outs! — Matt Doherty (@DohertyMatt) August 21, 2012

@austin_johnson can’t believe a Pack fan is taking shots at UNC’s education? Really? Stay tuned for some famous NC State quotes!

A famous NC State player once said, “I can go left, I can go right. I be amphibious!” Go Heels!

An NC State player said in response to a question on why he chose State, “I always wanted to go to school in the North.” He was from SC!

Isn’t twitter awesome?

Frankly, I don’t see anything wrong with what Doherty did. He took to twitter to stand up for one of his former players -- without defending any academic fraud that happened at the school -- while needling one of his team’s biggest rivals. I love it.

What I love more is that Doherty now has a full, bushy and completely white beard, seen here with a cigar, a fishing hat and an eight-pounder he caught in Florida:

Also, it appears that UNC has gotten the Downfall treatment:
