Weeks after getting news that center Henry Uwadiae would not be joining the Shockers for this upcoming season, Wichita State found out that it will be without another signee in the fall from the Class of 2012.

Deontae “Teddy” Hawkins, a 6-8 forward from Ohio, will take a prep year before joining Wichita State for the 2013-14 season, Paul Sullentrop of the Wichita Eagle is reporting.

According to the report, Hawkins still intends to sign with the Shockers, effectively only delaying his arrival at Wichita State.

“I still like everything about [WSU],” Hawkins told the paper. “The coaching staff is still cool. They’re showing a lot of interest.”

Hawkins had a long list of high-major offers before committing to Wichita State, including Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, DePaul, Miami, Cincinnati, and Georgia.

As a senior at Dunbar (Ohio), he averaged 17.3 points per game for a team that finished 28-0 and claimed the Ohio Division II state title.

While in high school, Hawkins was recruited primarily by Shockers assistant Dana Ford, who has since left to take an assistant coaching job at Illinois State. According to Sullentrop, the move was disappointing to Hawkins, but it does not appear that it will have an impact on his intent to re-sign with Wichita State.

With Uwadiae enrolling at Kirkwood Community College (Iowa) and Hawkins taking a prep year, the Shockers are now at the NCAA limit of 13 scholarship players.
