BYU guard Damarcus Harrison transferring to Clemson

Damarcus Harrison

BYU sophomore guard Damarcus Harrison has chosen to transfer to Clemson, the school announced Monday.

Harrison, a South Carolina native, moves closer to home after averaging 3.2 points and 1.0 rebounds per game for the Cougars this past season in just under nine minutes per game.

“We appreciate the hard work and dedication Damarcus gave to our program this past season,” BYU head coach Dave Rose said in a statement. “Damarcus is a great young man from a wonderful family. We wish them the very best with this new opportunity.”

Harrison explained the reason for his transfer to Jay Drew of the Salt Lake Tribune:

“Harrison, a 6-foot-3 guard, said he planned on leaving on a two-year church mission this summer, but his LDS Church bishop in South Carolina won’t submit the paperwork until January. He said when his mission plans were delayed, he wanted to return to BYU for another year, but his scholarship had already been given to another player.”

According to the report from Drew, Harrison will seek a waiver from the NCAA to play immediately at Clemson.

Coming out of high school, Harrison was a Top-100 player in the Class of 2011, recruited by Clemson, Charleston, Wisconsin, Virginia, Florida State, and others.

If he were to be granted a waiver and be eligible to play immediately at Clemson, he would be stepping onto a team that finished 16-15 this past season, including 8-8 in the ACC.

The Tigers were dealt a blow last month when it was reported that guard Devin Coleman tore his Achilles tendon and would be out six to eight months.
