Former Syracuse forward Mookie Jones signs agent, hopes to go pro in Canada

Less than two weeks after announcing that he would not be returning to Syracuse for his senior season, former Orange forward Mookie Jones acknowledged in a press release distributed Sunday that he has signed an agent and hopes to turn pro in Canada.

“I want to thank my coaches for the last 3 years. They have been through a lot with me and have helped me through all my tough times and helped my game develop,” he said in the release. “…I would like to thank all of the Syracuse fans for sticking with me and always being behind me. I plan to come back to Syracuse in the future and getting that degree that I have always wanted.”

Jones announced that he had signed with 610 Sports Management, an agency that has among its clients veteran NBA guard Damon Jones.

“I have decided that I will continue my career overseas...610 has a great team and has been very helpful to me over the past weeks and I look forward to joining them and helping them build as well as them helping my career build,” Jones said. “I look forward to playing very hard and proving to every one that I was meant to play this game.”

Coming out of Class of 2008, Jones was a Top-40 recruit with high-major interest and offers from schools that included DePaul, Marquette, St. John’s, Kansas, and Michigan.

During his freshman season at Syracuse he injured his hip, missing most of the season and later receiving a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA.

He was used sparingly during the 2009-10 season, averaging 5.8 points and 1.6 rebounds in just over 10 minutes per game.

But he ran into legal troubles this past fall when he was accused of cyberbullying a female student, which led to a year-long suspension from the Syracuse Judicial Review Board.

Between semesters this winter he left the team.

In the statement from his agent, Jones says he hopes to forge a career in the National Basketball League of Canada.
